Lisa Hurst de Faria was trained in classical and contemporary dance at The Performing Arts School of Worcester, Massachusetts, Boston School of Ballet, and SUNY Purchase. She was a scholarship student at Jacob´s Pillow Summer Dance Festival, working with Benjamin Harkarvy, Mark Morris, and Rosalind Newman, among others.
She danced in various companies in the U.S., including Feld Ballet, Dancesouth, Connecticut Ballet Theatre, SanAntonio Ballet, and in performances with Houston Grand Opera. Her first contact with the Pilates technique was with Robert Fitzgerald in New York, due to an injury.
In 1989 she followed choreographer Mark Haim to Portugal and danced with the Lisbon Dance Company, teaching both the company and school classes. She taught ballet and modern dance to young children and adolescents, and was also involved in diverse pedagogical projects, theater productions, and television.
While working as a dancer and performer in Lisbon, the Pilates technique returned to her life. She frequented workshops with Alan Herdman at the Alan Herdman Studios in London,and later obtained her Pilates Based Fundamental Matwork certification from the Pilates Institute of London. She frequented two Anatomy Trains (Myofascial Meridians for Manual and Movement Therapists) mini-courses with James Earls in 2011/2012. A certified instructor by Polestar Pilates®, Lisa taught from 1996-2012 at Estúdio Pilates Filipa Mayer in Lisbon, Portugal, and was a Mentor in Polestar's professional training program.
